The tables illustrate the figures for Chinese, Indian and Japanese students studying abroad in Canada and USA in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 academic years. During the two years, the total International students in the two countries both witnessed 5% and 6% increases respectively.

II.

1

Canada

USA

China

10065-10765(max), 2%

5650-5760, 2%

In Canada, the number of Chinese students dominated among the three groups of students in both years, rising slightly by 2% from 10065 to 10765. And USA also welcomed 2% more Chinese students during the period, even though the numbers were only around half of those in Canada.

2

USA

Canada

India

7650-7810(max),5%

1925-1965, 7%

More indian students, whose number grew by 5% from 7650 to 7810, prefered to studied in USA than thoes from the other two countries. In contrast, much fewer students from this country chose Canada as their destination for overseas study, with the data climbing by 7% from 1925 to 1965.

3

Canada

USA

Japan

5650-5760,2%

1925-1945,4%

In terms of Japanese students pursuing academic development in these two countries, their numbers both experienced moderate growths by 2% from 5650 to 5760 in Canada and by 4% in USA from 1925 to 1945.

III.

Overall, learning in North America gained in popularity among Asian students.

Task 2

Some people think “vertical city”, where people live and work in tall buildings, is the best. Others think “horizontal city”, where there are few fall buildings is better. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

“vertical city”:

work: well-equipped work environment (air-conditioning system)

more cooperation and business opportunities amomg companies

live:  bird eye view of the citysacpe, sunrise and sunset

“horizontal city”:

safety: low risk of being trapped in the fire

live: not so crowded, without gridlock, natural beauty

For my part, after considering the arguments above, both “vertical” and “horizontal” cities have their own advantages. People who have the ambition to succeed could choose to live and work in metropolis like Shanghai and NewYork where there are numerous high-rise office buildings and plazas. As for those who want to pursue inner peace, small cities without the concrete jungle, like Kyoto, are the places where they can really enjoy their lives. And during the process of city development, especially for those with profound cultural background, it is better to preserve each one uniqueness instead of creating some “hybrid” cities.

metropolis 大都会

high-rise office buildings and plazas 高层写字楼和plaza(Wanda Plaze, Injoy Plaza)
